Ramsey Patriot
Profile 9500
There are typically two reasons winches
are purchased. The first is because the
are cool, and necessary for the hardcore
off road look. But if you’re a hardcore 4
wheeler, you’ve probably be stuck without
a winch when you really needed one to
extracate yourself from a difficult spot. And
while a winch is a really cool piece of
hardware, if you’re serious about your 4x4
off road adventures, you need a winch.
One of the best-known names in off road
winches is Ramsey. Ramsey has been
manufactuering winches for iver 60 years
and we want to try one on our Land Rover
Discovery project. We are using the
Ramsey Patriot Profile 9500, a powerful
winch perfect for our needs. In addition to
use on the Land Rover, we will be using
the Ramsey winch on several DVD projects
including our recovery techniques DVD
scheduled for a Fall 2007 release.
In 1945, Claude Ramsey, realizing the
need for a front-mounted winch for
passenger cars and pickups, designed a
crankshaft-operated winch (Model 101) to
pull vehicles out of mud and snow.
Demand for the Ramsey Winch increased
to the point that the name of the company
was changed to Ramsey Brothers Winch
Manufacturing Company in 1947. In 1949,
a new 50’ x 100’ building was built, and in
1950, the company changed its name to
Ramsey Winch Company when Claude
Ramsey bought out his brother’s share of
the company. On December 22, 1959, the
company was incorporated into Ramsey
Winch Company, Inc.
In 1980, the company occupied its new
132,000 square foot plant and office
complex, commemorating the firm’s 35th
anniversary with the dedication of the new
facility to its founder, Claude Ramsey. The
facility is one of the most advanced winch
factories in the world, having unique
features designed into every phase of
design, production, assembly and
shipping.
The Ramsey Patriot Profile 9500 uses a
planetary gear set. The multiple gears
found in planetary gear winches translate
to greater pulling speed. The Patriot Profile
9500 utilizes an efficient 5.5 HP* 12 V DC
series wound electric reversible motor for
increased pulling power. The motor and
solenoids are grounded directly to battery
for improved electric power and
conductivity. This eliminates poor
grounding that can cause performance
failures and damage to the winch. Wiring is
heavy duty featuring 6 ft, 2 gauge battery
cables with connectors. A weather resistant
solenoid assembly keeps the winch
working under adverse weather conditions.
The proven three-stage planetary gear
system is designed for fast line speed. The
strong automatic load-holding brake
assures stability under heavy loads while
the winch is not pulling. The cam action
clutch disengages the planetary gear
system for free spooling when unwinding
the cable prior to attaching to an anchor
point. The Patriot Profile Series comes with
either a 12 ft. wire pendant remote or the
patent pending wireless remote for
effortless operation away from the winch
assembly. A 4-way roller fairlead helps
control the cable when winching. The
Ramsey Patriot Profile 9500 is made in the
USA and features a limited lifetime
warranty.
The 9500 is rated at 9500 pounds line pull
with a single line. The gear reduction ratio
is 138:1 at 12 volts. The Ramsey Patriot
Profile 9500 weighs 93 pounds and is
22.66" long by 6.12 inches long and 9.94
inches high. It is supplied with a 105 foot
galvanized aircraft cable with replaceable
clevis hook.
We mounted the winch to the ARB winch
bumper on the Land Rover Discovery,
which provided to be a straight forward
task with no surprises. Everything fit and
hook-up was easy.
Our initial test of the Ramsey Patriot Profile
9500 winch was inadvertent! We were
planning to use the winch on the Land
Rover to pull a second vehicle up an
incline, but we encountered snow a climb,
and without lockers on the Land Rover, we
could not manage to make it to the top.
Additionally, we found a fallen tree at the
top of the climb, a perfect anchor point to
test the Ramsey Patriot Profile 9500. The
video pretty much tells the story. Anchoring
the cable to the tree protector was simple,
and the 9500 easily wheeled the Land
Rover up the grade to the top without
breaking a sweat.
We will be using the Ramsey winch for
several video segments, and on a recovery
technique DVD project, so check back.
